John 19:1-42

[Joh 19:2] The Holly And The Ivy
The Holly and the Ivy
Now both are full well grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
The Holly bears the crown.Refrain
O the rising of the sun,
The running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the quire,
Sweet singing in the quire.The Holly bears a blossom,
As white as lily-flower;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To be our sweet Savior.Refrain
The Holly bears a berry,
As red as any blood;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To do poor sinners good.Refrain
The Holly bears a prickle,
As sharp as any thorn;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
On Christmas Day in the morn.Refrain
The Holly bears a bark,
As bitter as any gall;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
For to redeem us all.Refrain
The Holly and the Ivy
Now both are full well grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
The Holly bears the crown.Refrain

[Joh 19:5] O Sinner, Lift The Eye Of Faith
O sinner, lift the eye of faith,
To true repentance turning;
Bethink thee of the curse of sin,
Its awful guilt discerning;
Upon the Crucified One look,
And thou shalt read, as in a book,
What well is worthy thy learning.Look on His head, that bleeding head,
With crown of thorns surrounded;
Look on His sacred hands and feet
Which piercing nails have wounded;
See every limb with scourges rent:
On Him, the Just, the Innocent,
What malice hath abounded!’Tis not alone those limbs are racked,
But friends, too, are forsaking;
And, more than all, for thankless man
That tender heart is aching;
Oh, fearful was the pain and scorn,
By Jesus, Son of Mary, borne,
Their peace for sinners making.None ever knew such pain before,
Such infinite affliction,
None ever felt a grief like His
In that dread crucifixion;
For us He bare those bitter throes,
For us those agonizing woes,
In oft renewed infliction.O sinner, mark, and ponder well
Sin’s awful condemnation;
Think what a sacrifice it cost
To purchase Thy salvation;
Had Jesus never bled and died,
Then what could thee and all betide
But uttermost damnation?Lord, give us grace to flee from sin,
And Satan’s wiles ensnaring,
And from those everlasting flames
For evil ones preparing.
Jesu, we thank Thee, and entreat
To rest forever at Thy feet,
Thy heavenly glory sharing.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:5] Ye That Pass By, Behold The Man
Ye that pass by, behold the Man,
The Man of grief condemned for you;
The Lamb of God for sinners slain
Weeping to Calvary pursue.His sacred limbs, they stretch, they tear,
With nails they fasten to the wood—
His sacred limbs exposed and bare,
Or only covered with His blood.See there! His temples crowned with thorns,
His bleeding hands extended wide;
His streaming feet transfixed and torn,
The fountain gushing from His side.Thou dear, Thou suff’ring Son of God,
How doth Thy heart to sinners move!
Sprinkle on us Thy precious blood,
And melt us with Thy dying love.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:17] Let Me Dwell On Golgotha
Let me dwell on Golgotha,
Weep and love my life away!
While I see Him on the tree
Weep and bleed, and die for me!That dear blood, for sinners spilt,
Shows my sin in all its guilt:
Ah, my soul, He bore thy load,
Thou hast slain the Lamb of God.Hark! His dying words; “Forgive,
Father, let the sinner live;
Sinner, wipe thy tears away,
I thy ransom freely pay.”While I hear this grace revealed,
And obtain a pardon sealed;
All my lost affections move,
Wakened by the force of love.Farewell world, thy gold is dross,
Now I see the bleeding cross;
Jesus died to set me free
From the law, and sin, and thee!He has dearly bought my soul
Lord, accept, and claim the whole!
To Thy will I all resign,
Now, no more my own, but Thine.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:17] Stretched On The Cross, The Savior Dies
Stretched on the cross, the Savior dies,
Hark! His expiring groans arise;
See, how the sacred crimson tide
Flows from His hands, His feet, His side.To suffer in the traitor’s place,
To die for man—surprising grace!
Yet pass rebellious angels by—
O why for man, dear Savior, why?And didst Thou bleed? for sinners bleed?
And could the sun behold the deed?
No! he withdrew his sickening ray,
And darkness veiled the mourning day.Can I survey this scene of woe,
Where mingling grief and wonder flow,
And yet my heart unmoved remain,
Insensible to love or pain?Come, dearest Lord, Thy grace impart,
To warm this cold, this stupid heart,
Till all its powers and passions move,
In melting grief, and ardent love.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:17] There Is A Green Hill Far Away
There is a green hill far away,
Outside a city wall,
Where the dear Lord was crucified,
Who died to save us all.Refrain
O dearly, dearly, has He loved,
And we must love Him, too,
And trust in His redeeming blood,
And try His works to do.We may not know, we cannot tell,
What pains He had to bear;
But we believe it was for us
He hung and suffered there.Refrain
He died that we might be forgiv’n,
He died to make us good,
That we might go at last to Heav’n,
Saved by His precious blood.Refrain
There was no other good enough
To pay the price of sin;
He only could unlock the gate
Of heaven and let us in.Refrain
O dearly, dearly has He loved,
And we must love Him, too,
And trust in His redeeming blood,
And try His works to do.Refrain

[Joh 19:18] Were You There?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:25] My Lord, My Master, At Thy Feet Adoring
My Lord, my Master, at Thy feet adoring,
I see Thee bowed beneath Thy load of woe;
For me, a sinner, is Thy life blood pouring;
For Thee, my Savior, scarce my tears will flow.Thine own disciple to the Jews has sold Thee,
With friendship’s kiss and loyal word he came;
How oft of faithful love my lips have told Thee,
While Thou hast seen my falsehood and my shame.With taunts and scoffs they mock what seems Thy weakness,
With blows and outrage adding pain to pain;
Thou art unmoved and steadfast in Thy meekness;
When I am wronged how quickly I complain!My Lord, my Savior, when I see Thee wearing
Upon Thy bleeding brow the crown of thorn,
Shall I for pleasure live, or shrink from bearing
Whate’er my lot may be of pain or scorn?O Victim of Thy love, O pangs most healing,
O saving death, O wounds that I adore,
O shame most glorious! Christ, before Thee kneeling,
I pray Thee keep me Thine for evermore.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:28] His Are The Thousand Sparkling Rills
His are the thousand sparkling rills
That from a thousand fountains burst,
And fill with music all the hills;
And yet He saith, “I thirst.”All fiery pangs on battlefields;
On fever beds where sick men toss,
And in that human cry He yields
To anguish on the cross.But more than pains that racked Him then,
Was the deep longing thirst divine
That thirsted for the souls of men:
Dear Lord! and one was mine.O Love most patient, give me grace;
Make all my soul athirst for Thee;
That parched dry lip, that fading face,
That thirst, were all for me.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:28] O Perfect God, Thy Love
O perfect God, Thy love
As perfect Man did share
Here upon earth each form of ill
Thy fellow men must bear.Now from the tree of scorn
We hear Thy voice again;
Thou Who didst take our mortal flesh
Hast felt our mortal pain.Thy body suffers thirst,
Parched are Thy lips and dry:
How poor the offering man can bring
Thy thirst to satisfy!O Savior, by Thy thirst
Borne on the cross of shame,
Grant us in all our sufferings leave
To glorify Thy Name.That through each pain and grief
Our souls may onward move
To gain more likeness to Thy life,
More knowledge of Thy love.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:30] All Is O’er, The Pain, The Sorrow
All is o’er, the pain, the sorrow,
Human taunts and fiendish spite;
Death shall be despoiled tomorrow
Of the prey he grasps tonight;
Yet awhile, His own to save,
Christ must linger in the grave.Dark and still the cell that holds Him,
While in brief repose He lies;
Deep the slumber that enfolds Him,
Veiled awhile from mortal eyes;
Slumber such as needs must be
After hard won victory.Fierce and deadly was the anguish
Which on yonder cross He bore;
How did soul and body languish
Till the toil of death was o’er:
But that toil, so fierce and dread,
Bruised and crushed the serpent’s head.All night long, with plaintive voicing,
Chant His requiem soft and low:
Loftier strains of loud rejoicing
From tomorrow’s harps shall flow:
“Death and hell at length are slain!
Christ hath triumphed! Christ doth reign!”Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:30] All The Sacrifice Is Ended
All the sacrifice is ended,
Breathed His body’s latest breath,
And His human Soul hath wended
Where the weary rest beneath;
Christ as Man hath comprehended
All the human law of death!Yet not there His Soul remaineth
Nor His body in the tomb:
Lo! what sudden glory gaineth
Quick dominion o’er the gloom!
Yea, o’er death and hell He reigneth
Bursting back the gates of doom!Manifold the attestation
Brethren tell the marvel o’er,
And the soldiers from their station,
And the angels at the door,
And His own Word’s revelation,
“Lo! I live for evermore.”Hail, thou morn of resurrection,
Primal holy Easter Day!
Now the hours of deep dejection
’Neath the night-clouds’ dark array,
Foes’ reviling, friends’ defection,
In thy glory pass away!Now He lives and reigns for ever!
That we too may enter in
Where eternal life shall never
Taste of sorrow or of sin,
Where from Him no death shall sever
Those He vanquished death to win.Savior! in our night of weeping
Tell us of the joyful morn,
Guard our souls, their vigil keeping
In the hours of hate and scorn
Raise us falling, wake us sleeping,
Till our Easter Day be born.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:30] From The Cross
From the cross uplifted high,
Where the Savior deigns to die,
What melodious sounds we hear,
Bursting on the ravished ear!
“Love’s redeeming work is done—
Come and welcome! sinner, come!Sprinkled now with blood the throne;
Why beneath thy burdens groan?
On My piercèd body laid,
Justice owns the ransom paid:
Bow the knee, and kiss the Son,
Come and welcome, sinner, come.“Spread for thee, the festal board
See with richest bounty stored;
To thy Father’s bosom pressed,
Thou shalt be a child confessed,
Never from His house to roam;
Come and welcome! sinner, come!“Soon the days of life shall end—
Lo, I come—your Savior, Friend!
Safe your spirit to convey
To the realms of endless day,
Up to My eternal home—
Come and welcome! sinner, come!”Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:30] It Is Finished (gillett)
It is finished! Christ hath known
All the life of men wayfaring;
Human joys and sorrows sharing,
Making human needs His own.
Lord, in us Thy life renewing,
Lead us where Thy feet have trod,
Till, the way of truth pursuing,
Human souls find rest in God.It is finished! Christ is slain,
On the altar of creation,
Offering for a world’s salvation
Sacrifice of love and pain.
Lord, Thy love through pain revealing,
Purge our passions, scourge our vice,
Till, upon the tree of healing,
Self is slain in sacrifice.It is finished! Christ our King
Wins the victor’s crown of glory;
Sun and stars recite His story,
Floods and fields His triumph sing.
Lord, whose praise the world is telling,
Lord, to Whom all power is given,
By Thy death, hell’s armies quelling,
Bring Thy saints to reign in Heav’n.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:30] It Is Finished (proctor)
Nothing, either great or small—
Nothing, sinner, no;
Jesus died and paid it all,
Long, long ago.Refrain
“It is finished!” yes, indeed,
Finished, ev’ry jot;
Sinner, this is all you need,
Tell me, is it not?Refrain
When He, from His lofty throne,
Stooped to do and die,
Ev’rything was fully done;
Hearken to His cry!Refrain
Weary, working, burdened one,
Wherefore toil you so?
Cease your doing; all was done
Long, long ago.Refrain
Till to Jesus’ work you cling
By a simple faith,
“Doing” is a deadly thing—
“Doing” ends in death.Refrain
Cast your deadly “doing” down—
Down at Jesus’ feet;
Stand in Him, in Him alone,
Gloriously complete.Refrain

[Joh 19:30] ’tis Finished! So The Savior Cried
’Tis finished! so the Savior cried,
And meekly bowed His head and died;
’Tis finished—yes, the race is run,
The battle fought, the victory won.“’Tis finished—all that Heaven decreed,
And all the ancient prophets said,
Is now fulfilled, as was designed,
In Me the Savior of mankind.”’Tis finished—Heaven is reconciled,
And all the powers of darkness spoiled.
Peace, love, and happiness again
Return and dwell with sinful men.’Tis finished—let all the joyful sound
Be heard through all the nations round:
’Tis finished—let the echo fly
Thro’ Heav’n and hell, thro’ earth and sky.Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:30] ’tis Finished! The Messiah Dies
’Tis finished! The Messiah dies,
Cut off for sins, but not His own:
Accomplished is the sacrifice,
The great redeeming work is done.’Tis finished! all the debt is paid;
Justice divine is satisfied;
The grand and full atonement made;
God for a guilty world hath died.The veil is rent in Christ alone;
The living way to Heaven is seen;
The middle wall is broken down,
And all mankind may enter in.The types and figures are fulfilled;
Exacted is the legal pain;
The precious promises are sealed;
The spotless Lamb of God is slain.The reign of sin and death is o’er,
And all may live from sin set free;
Satan hath lost his mortal power;
’Tis swallowed up in victory.Saved from the legal curse I am,
My Savior hangs on yonder tree:
See there the meek, expiring Lamb!
’Tis finished! He expires for me.Accepted in the Well-beloved,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
I see the bar to heaven removed;
And all Thy merits, Lord, are mine.Death, hell, and sin are now subdued;
All grace is now to sinners given;
And lo, I plead the atoning blood,
And in Thy right I claim Thy Heaven!Play source: Cyberhymnal -
[Joh 19:34] At The Lamb’s High Feast We Sing
At the Lamb’s high feast we sing,
Praise to our victorious King,
Who hath washed us in the tide
Flowing from his piercèd side;
Praise we Him, whose love divine
Gives His sacred blood for wine,
Gives His body for the feast,
Christ the Victim, Christ the Priest.Where the Paschal blood is poured,
Death’s dark angel sheathes his sword;
Israel’s hosts triumphant go
Through the wave that drowns the foe.
Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed,
Paschal Victim, paschal Bread;
With sincerity and love
Eat we Manna from above.Mighty Victim from the sky,
Hell’s fierce powers beneath Thee lie;
Thou hast conquered in the fight,
Thou hast brought us life and light;
Now no more can death appall,
Now no more the grave enthrall;
Thou hast opened Paradise,
And in Thee Thy saints shall rise.Paschal triumph, Easter joy,
Only sin can this destroy;
From sin’s death do Thou set free
Souls reborn, O Lord, in Thee.
Hymns of glory and of praise,
Father, to Thee we raise;
Risen Lord, all praise to Thee,
Ever with the Spirit be.Play source: Cyberhymnal
