John 1:43

Context
The Calling of More Disciples

1:43 On the next day Jesus 5  wanted to set out for Galilee. 6  He 7  found Philip and said 8  to him, “Follow me.”

1 tn Grk “he”; the referent (John) has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

2 sn Gen 22:8 is an important passage in the background of the title Lamb of God as applied to Jesus. In Jewish thought this was held to be a supremely important sacrifice. G. Vermès stated: “For the Palestinian Jew, all lamb sacrifice, and especially the Passover lamb and the Tamid offering, was a memorial of the Akedah with its effects of deliverance, forgiveness of sin and messianic salvation” (Scripture and Tradition in Judaism [StPB], 225).

3 sn John refers to John the Baptist.

4 tn “There” is not in the Greek text but is implied by current English idiom.

5 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity. Jesus is best taken as the subject of εὑρίσκει (Jeuriskei), since Peter would scarcely have wanted to go to Galilee.

6 sn No explanation is given for why Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee, but probably he wanted to go to the wedding at Cana (about a two day trip).

7 tn Grk “and he.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

8 tn Grk “and Jesus said.”
