Romans 3:26

Context
3:26 This was 1  also to demonstrate 2  his righteousness in the present time, so that he would be just 3  and the justifier of the one who lives because of Jesus’ faithfulness. 4

4:13 For the promise 5  to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not fulfilled through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

Romans 8:29

Context
8:29 because those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son 6  would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 7

Romans 9:11

Context
9:11 even before they were born or had done anything good or bad (so that God’s purpose in election 8  would stand, not by works but by 9  his calling) 10

1 tn The words “This was” have been repeated from the previous verse to clarify that this is a continuation of that thought. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

2 tn Grk “toward a demonstration,” repeating and expanding the purpose of God’s action in v. 25a.

3 tn Or “righteous.”

4 tn Or “of the one who has faith in Jesus.” See note on “faithfulness of Jesus Christ” in v. 22 for the rationale behind the translation “Jesus’ faithfulness.”

5 sn Although a singular noun, the promise is collective and does not refer only to Gen 12:7, but as D. Moo (Romans 1-8 [WEC], 279) points out, refers to multiple aspects of the promise to Abraham: multiplied descendants (Gen 12:2), possession of the land (Gen 13:15-17), and his becoming the vehicle of blessing to all people (Gen 12:13).

6 tn Grk “he”; the referent (God’s Son) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

7 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:13.

8 tn Grk “God’s purpose according to election.”

9 tn Or “not based on works but based on…”

10 tn Grk “by the one who calls.”

sn The entire clause is something of a parenthetical remark.
