tn Grk “for their females exchanged the natural function for that which is contrary to nature.” The term χρῆσις (crhsi") has the force of “sexual relations” here (L&N 23.65).
tn Grk “and just as they did not approve to have God in knowledge.”
tn Grk “the things that are improper.”
tn Grk “do you think this,” referring to the clause in v. 3b.
tn Grk “O man, the one who judges.”
tn Grk “and do them.” The other words are supplied to bring out the contrast implied in this clause.
tn Grk “who.” The relative pronoun was converted to a personal pronoun and, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
tn Grk “show the work of the law [to be] written,” with the words in brackets implied by the Greek construction.
tn Or “excuse.”
tn Grk “their conscience bearing witness and between the thoughts accusing or also defending one another.”
tn Grk “of whom.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
tn The Greek term υἱοθεσία (Juioqesia) was originally a legal technical term for adoption as a son with full rights of inheritance. BDAG 1024 s.v. notes, “a legal t.t. of ‘adoption’ of children, in our lit., i.e. in Paul, only in a transferred sense of a transcendent filial relationship between God and humans (with the legal aspect, not gender specificity, as major semantic component).” Although some modern translations remove the filial sense completely and render the term merely “adoption” (cf. NAB, ESV), the retention of this component of meaning was accomplished in the present translation by the phrase “as sons.”
tn Or “cultic service.”
tn Grk “And it will be in the very place.”
sn A quotation from Hos 1:10.
sn A quotation from Lev 18:5.
sn A quotation from Deut 29:4; Isa 29:10.
tn Grk “For one judges day from day, and one judges all days.”
tn Grk “have sealed this fruit to them.”
tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:13.
