Romans 9:8

Context
9:8 This means 4  it is not the children of the flesh 5  who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants.

Romans 14:13

Context
Exhortation for the Strong not to Destroy the Weak

14:13 Therefore we must not pass judgment on one another, but rather determine never to place an obstacle or a trap before a brother or sister. 6

1 tn Grk “who.” The relative pronoun was converted to a personal pronoun and, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

2 tn Grk “the lie.”

3 tn Or “creature, created things.”

4 tn Grk “That is,” or “That is to say.”

5 tn Because it forms the counterpoint to “the children of promise” the expression “children of the flesh” has been retained in the translation.

sn The expression the children of the flesh refers to the natural offspring.

6 tn Grk “brother.”
