  The countless multitudes on high, Who tune their songs to Jesus’ Name, All merit of their own deny, And Jesus’ worth alone proclaim. Firm on the ground of sovereign grace They stand before Jehovah’s throne; The new song in that blessèd place Is, “Thou art worthy, Thou alone!” With spotless robes of purest white, And branches of triumphal palm, They shout, with transports of delight, Heaven’s ceaseless, universal psalm; “Salvation’s glory all be paid To Him who sits upon the throne, And to the Lamb whose blood was shed: Thou, Thou art worthy, Thou alone; For Thou was slain, and in Thy blood These robes were washed so spotless pure! Thou mad’st us kings and priests to God: For ever let Thy praise endure!” While thus the ransomed myriads shout, “Amen!” the holy angels cry— Amen! Amen! resounds throughout The boundless regions of the sky.

  O for a sweet, inspiring ray, To animate our feeble strains, From the bright realms of endless day, The blissful realms where Jesus reigns. There low before the glorious throne, Adoring saints and angels fall! And with delightful worship own His smile their bliss, their heav’n, their all. Immortal glories crown His head, While tuneful hallelujahs rise, And love, and joy, and triumph spread, Thro’ all th’assemblies of the skies. He smiles, and seraphs tune their songs, To boundless rapture while they gaze; Ten thousand, joyful tongues Resound His everlasting praise.

  See the ransomed millions stand, Palms of conquest in their hand; This before the throne their strain, “Hell is vanquished, death is slain; Blessing, honor, glory, might, Are the Conqueror’s native right; Thrones and powers before Him fall, Lamb of God and Lord of all!” Hasten, Lord the promised hour; Come in glory and in power; Still Thy foes are unsubdued; Nature sighs to be renewed.   Thro’ the new Heav’n what voices ring In praise triumphant to our King? Like many waters, hark, they pour Their tide along the golden shore! “All blessing, honor, power divine, All might and majesty be Thine! Holy and true are all Thy words, Thou King of kings and Lord of lords!” These from the martyrs bed of flame, These from the gloomy dungeon came, These, on the dreadful battlefield, Stood firm till death and would not yield. All voices in that faithful throng, Swell clear and true the glorious song; “Holy and true are all Thy words, Thou King of kings and Lord of lords!” These bore Thy banner o’er the sea, Exiled and poor for love of Thee, And found in danger and distress, Thy presence in the wilderness. No storm could shake, no ill could harm So strong was Thy protecting arm, “Holy and true are all Thy words, Thou King of kings and Lord of lords!”

  Come, kingdom of our God, Sweet reign of light and love! Shed peace and hope and joy abroad, And wisdom, from above. Over our spirits first Extend Thy healing reign; There raise and quench the sacred thirst That never pains again. Come, kingdom of our God! And make the broad earth Thine; Stretch o’er her lands and isles the rod That flowers with grace divine. Soon may all tribes be blest With fruit from life’s glad tree; And in its shade like brothers rest, Sons of one family.   For all the saints, who from their labors rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might; Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! For the Apostles’ glorious company, Who bearing forth the Cross o’er land and sea, Shook all the mighty world, we sing to Thee: Alleluia, Alleluia! For the Evangelists, by whose blest word, Like fourfold streams, the garden of the Lord, Is fair and fruitful, be Thy Name adored. Alleluia, Alleluia! For Martyrs, who with rapture kindled eye, Saw the bright crown descending from the sky, And seeing, grasped it, Thee we glorify. Alleluia, Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine!   Hear what the voice from Heav’n proclaims, For all the pious dead; Sweet is the savor of their names, And soft their sleeping bed. They died in Jesus, and are blest; How kind their slumbers are!   How blest the righteous when he dies! When sinks a weary soul to rest, How mildly beam the closing eyes, How gently heaves th’expiring breast! So fades a summer cloud away; So sinks a gale when storms are o’er; So gently shuts the eye of day; So dies a wave along the shore. A holy quiet reigns around, A calm which life nor death destroys; And naught disturbs that peace profound Which his unfettered soul enjoys. Farewell, conflicting hopes and fears, Where lights and shades alternate dwell; How bright th’unchanging morn appears! Farewell, inconstant world, farewell! Life’s labor done, as sinks the clay, Light from its load the spirit flies, While Heav’n and earth combine to say, “How blest the righteous when he dies!”

  Hush! blessèd are the dead In Jesus’ arms who rest, And lean their weary head Forever on His breast. O beatific sight! No darkling veil between, They see the Light of Light, Whom here they loved unseen. Them the Good Shepherd leads, Where storms are never rife, In tranquil dewy meads Beside the Fount of Life. O tender hearts and true, Our long last vigil kept, We weep and mourn for you; Nor blame us: Jesus wept. But soon at break of day His calm almighty voice, Stronger than death, shall say, Awake! Arise! Rejoice!

  Oh, how blest are ye whose toils are ended! Who, through death, have unto God ascended! Ye have arisen From the cares which keep us still in prison. We are still as in a dungeon living, Still oppressed with sorrow and misgiving; Our undertakings Are but toils, and troubles, and heart-breakings. Ye meanwhile, are in your chambers sleeping, Quiet, and set free from all our weeping; No cross nor trial Hinders your enjoyments with denial. Christ has wiped away your tears for ever; Ye have that for which we still endeavor. To you are chanted Songs which yet no mortal ear have haunted. Ah! who would not, then, depart with gladness, To inherit Heaven for earthly sadness? Who here would languish Longer in bewailing and in anguish? Come, O Christ, and loose the chains that bind us! Lead us forth, and cast this world behind us! With Thee, the Anointed, Finds the soul its joy and rest appointed.
