Psalms 89:1

Context
Psalm 89 6

A well-written song 7  by Ethan the Ezrachite.

to future generations I will proclaim your faithfulness. 9

Psalms 102:24

Context

102:24 I say, “O my God, please do not take me away in the middle of my life! 10

You endure through all generations. 11

1 tn Heb “do not remember against us sins, former.” Some understand “former” as an attributive adjective modifying sins, “former [i.e., chronologically prior] sins” (see BDB 911 s.v. רִאשׁוֹן). The present translation assumes that ראשׁנים (“former”) here refers to those who lived formerly, that is, the people’s ancestors (see Lam 5:7). The word is used in this way in Lev 26:45; Deut 19:14 and Eccl 1:11.

2 tn Heb “may your compassion quickly confront us.” The prefixed verbal form is understood as a jussive, indicating a tone of prayer.

3 tn Heb “for we are very low.”

4 tn Or (hyperbolically) “will thank you forever.”

5 tn Heb “to a generation and a generation we will report your praise.” Here “praise” stands by metonymy for the mighty acts that prompt worship. Cf. Ps 9:14.

6 sn Psalm 89. The psalmist praises God as the sovereign creator of the world. He recalls God’s covenant with David, but then laments that the promises of the covenant remain unrealized. The covenant promised the Davidic king military victories, but the king has now been subjected to humiliating defeat.

7 tn The meaning of the Hebrew term מַשְׂכִּיל (maskil) is uncertain. See the note on the phrase “well-written song” in the superscription of Ps 88.

8 tn Or “forever.”

9 tn Heb “to a generation and a generation I will make known your faithfulness with my mouth.”

10 tn Heb “do not lift me up in the middle of my days.”

11 tn Heb “in a generation of generations [are] your years.”
