Context

78:5 He established a rule 1  in Jacob;

he set up a law in Israel.

He commanded our ancestors

to make his deeds known to their descendants, 2

78:6 so that the next generation, children yet to be born,

might know about them.

They will grow up and tell their descendants about them. 3

Psalms 109:13

Context

109:13 May his descendants 4  be cut off! 5

May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives! 6

Psalms 132:11

Context

132:11 The Lord made a reliable promise to David; 7

he will not go back on his word. 8

He said, 9  “I will place one of your descendants 10  on your throne.

1 tn The Hebrew noun עֵדוּת (’edut) refers here to God’s command that the older generation teach their children about God’s mighty deeds in the nation’s history (see Exod 10:2; Deut 4:9; 6:20-25).

2 tn Heb “which he commanded our fathers to make them known to their sons.” The plural suffix “them” probably refers back to the Lord’s mighty deeds (see vv. 3-4).

3 tn Heb “in order that they might know, a following generation, sons [who] will be born, they will arise and will tell to their sons.”

4 tn Or “offspring.”

5 sn On the expression cut off see Ps 37:28.

6 tn Heb “in another generation may their name be wiped out.”

7 tn Heb “the Lord swore an oath to David [in] truth.”

8 tn Heb “he will not turn back from it.”

9 tn The words “he said” are supplied in the translation to clarify that what follows are the Lord’s words.

10 tn Heb “the fruit of your body.”
