Psalms 148:10

Context

148:10 you animals and all you cattle,

you creeping things and birds,

1 tn Heb “[be] blessed.” See Pss 18:46; 28:6; 31:21; 41:13.

2 tn Heb “[the] one who does amazing things by himself.”

3 tn Heb “his deeds.”

4 tn Heb “and did not believe in his amazing deeds.”

5 tn Heb “glorious things are spoken about you.” The translation assumes this is a general reference to compliments paid to Zion by those who live within her walls and by those who live in the surrounding areas and lands. Another option is that this refers to a prophetic oracle about the city’s glorious future. In this case one could translate, “wonderful things are announced concerning you.”

6 tn Heb “for a mouth of evil and a mouth of deceit against me they open, they speak with me [with] a tongue of falsehood.”

7 tn Heb “and [with] words of hatred they surround me.”

8 tn Heb “[may] this [be] the repayment to my accusers from the Lord.”

9 tn Or “against.”

10 tn The Hebrew term נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh, “being; soul”) with a pronominal suffix is often equivalent to a pronoun, especially in poetry (see BDB 660 s.v. נֶפֶשׁ 4.a).

11 tn Or “did,” if this refers primarily to the events of the exodus and conquest period (see vv. 6, 9).

12 tn Heb “a memorial he had made for his amazing deeds.”

13 tn Heb “uncover.” The verb form גַּל (gal) is an apocopated Piel imperative from גָּלָה (galah, see GKC 214 §75.cc).

14 tn The cohortative with vav (ו) conjunctive indicates purpose/result after the preceding imperative.

15 tn Heb “to all flesh,” which can refer to all people (see Pss 65:2; 145:21) or more broadly to mankind and animals. Elsewhere the psalms view God as the provider for all living things (see Pss 104:27-28; 145:15).
