  Prayer is the key for the bending knee To open the morn’s first hours; See the incense rise to the starry skies, Like perfume from the flow’rs. Not a soul so sad, nor a heart so glad When cometh the shades of night, But the daybreak song will the joy prolong, And some darkness turn to light. Take the golden key in your hand and see, As the night-tide drifts away, How its blessèd hold is a crown of gold, Thro’ the weary hours of day. When the shadows fall, and the vesper call Is sobbing its low refrain, ’Tis a garland sweet to the toil-dent feet, And an antidote for pain. Soon our toils will cease, and will come release; Life’s tears shall be wiped away, As the pearl gates swing, and the gold harps ring, And we enter eternal day.

• [Psa 47:5] Lo, God To Heav’n Ascendeth

  Lo, God to Heav’n ascendeth! Throughout its regions vast With shouts triumphant blendeth the trumpet’s thrilling blast: Sing praise to Christ the Lord; sing praise with exultation, King of each heathen nation, the God of hosts adored! With joy is Heav’n resounding Christ’s glad return to see; Behold the saints surrounding the Lord Who set them free. Bright myriads, thronging, come; the cherub band rejoices, And loud seraphic voices all welcome Jesus home. From cross to throne ascending, we follow Christ on high And know the pathway wending to mansions in the sky. Our Lord is gone before; yet here He will not leave us, And soon in Heav’n receive us and open wide the door. Our place He is preparing; to Heav’n we, too, shall rise, With Him His glory sharing, be where our Treasure lies. Bestir thyself, my soul! Where Jesus Christ has entered, There let Thy hope be centered; press onward toward the goal. Let all our thoughts be winging to where Thou didst ascend, And let our hearts be singing: “We seek Thee, Christ, our Friend, Thee, God’s exalted Son, our Life, and Way to heaven, To Whom all power is given, our Joy and Hope and Crown.”

  Let God arise, and by His might Let all His foes be put to flight; But O ye righteous, gladly sing, Exult before your God and King. Jehovah’s praises sound abroad Rejoice before the living God; Prepare the way that He may come And make the desert places bloom. A Father of the fatherless, A judge of widows in distress Is God, the God of boundless grace, Who dwells within His holy place. God frees the captive and He sends The blessedness of home and friends, And only those in darkness stay Who will not trust Him and obey. O Zion, ’tis thy God’s command That thou in strength securely stand; O God, confirm and strengthen still, Thy purposes in us fulfill. O Thou, whose glorious temple stands In Zion, famed through heathen lands, Kings shall Thy power and glory see, And bring their presents unto Thee. Thou wilt rebuke the fierce and strong Who hate the right and choose the wrong, And scatter those who peace abhor, The nations that delight in war. The heathen princes yet shall flee From idols and return to Thee; Earth’s sinful and benighted lands, To God shall soon stretch out their hands.

  Let God arise in all His might, And put the troops of hell to flight, As smoke that sought to cloud the skies Before the rising tempest flies. He comes arrayed in burning flames, Justice and Vengeance are His names; Behold His fainting foes expire, Like melting wax before the fire. He shakes the heav’ns with loud alarms; How terrible is God in arms! In Israel are His mercies known, Israel is His peculiar throne. Proclaim Him King, pronounce Him blest; He’s your Defense, your Joy, your Rest: When terrors rise and nations faint, God is the Strength of every saint.
