  How good is the God we adore, Our faithful unchangeable Friend! His love is as great as His power, And knows neither measure nor end! ’Tis Jesus the First and the Last, Whose Spirit shall Guide us safe home, We’ll praise Him for all that is past, And trust Him for all that’s to come.

• [Psa 52:1] O Mighty Man, Why Wilt Thou Boast

  O mighty man, why wilt thou boast Thyself in hateful cruelty, When God Almighty is most kind, And ever merciful is He? Thy tongue deviseth wickedness, A weapon treacherous and keen; Thou lovest evil more than good, And falsehood in thy sight is clean. Since, O thou false, deceitful tongue, In deadly words thou findest joy, The Lord shall pluck thee from thy place And all thy wickedness destroy. The good, confirmed in godly fear, The pride and folly shall confess Of those who make not God their strength, But trust in wealth and wickedness. But as for me, my strength is like A verdant temple olive tree; My trust is in God’s tender love, Which shall endure eternally. With endless thanks, O Lord, to Thee, Thy wondrous works I will proclaim, And in the presence of Thy saints Will ever hope in Thy good Name.

• [Psa 56:1] O Thou Whose Justice Reigns On High

  O Thou whose justice reigns on high, And makes th’oppressor cease, Behold how envious sinners try To vex and break my peace. The sons of violence and lies Join to devour me, Lord; But as my hourly dangers rise, My refuge is Thy Word. In God most holy, just, and true, I have reposed my trust; Nor will I fear what flesh can do, The offspring of the dust. They wrest my words to mischief still, Charge me with unknown faults; Mischief doth all their counsels fill, And malice all their thoughts. Shall they escape without Thy frown? Must their devices stand? O cast the haughty sinner down, And let him know Thy hand. God counts the sorrows of His saints, Their groans affect His ears; Thou hast a book for my complaints, A bottle for my tears. When to Thy throne I raise my cry, The wicked fear and flee; So swift is prayer to reach the sky, So near is God to me. In Thee, most holy, just, and true, I have reposed my trust; Nor will I fear what man can do, The offspring of the dust. Thy solemn vows are on me, Lord, Thou shalt receive my praise; I’ll sing, “How faithful is Thy Word, How righteous all Thy ways!” Thou hast secured my soul from death, O set Thy pris’ner free! That heart and hand, and life and breath, May be employ’d for Thee.

• [Psa 63:1] Early, My God, Without Delay

  Early, my God, without delay, I haste to seek Thy face; My thirsty spirit faints away Without Thy cheering grace. So pilgrims on the scorching sand, Beneath a burning sky, Long for a cooling stream at hand, And they must drink or die. I’ve seen Thy glory and Thy power Through all Thy temple shine; My God, repeat that heav’nly hour, That vision so divine. Not all the blessings of a feast Can please my soul so well, As when Thy richer grace I taste, And in Thy presence dwell. Not life itself, with all her joys, Can my best passions move, Or raise so high my cheerful voice, As Thy forgiving love. Thus till my last expiring day I’ll bless my God and King; Thus will I lift my hands to pray, And tune my lips to sing.

  Now begin the heavenly race— The Savior calls today; Let us early seek His face, And early learn to pray.   I hunger and I thirst, Jesu, my manna be; Ye living waters, burst Out of the rock for me. Thou bruised and broken Bread, My life-long wants supply; As living souls are fed, O feed me, or I die. Thou true life-giving Vine, Let me Thy sweetness prove; Renew my life with Thine, Refresh my soul with love.   My God, permit my tongue This joy, to call Thee mine; And let my early cries prevail To taste Thy love divine. My thirsty, fainting soul Thy mercy doth implore; Not travelers in desert lands Can pant for water more. Within Thy churches, Lord, I long to find my place; Thy power and glory to behold, And feel Thy quick’ning grace. For life without Thy love No relish can afford; No joy can be compared to this, To serve and please the Lord. To Thee I’ll lift my hands, And praise Thee while I live; Not the rich dainties of a feast Such food or pleasure give. In wakeful hours at night I call my God to mind; I think how wise Thy counsels are, And all Thy dealings kind. Since thou hast been my help, To Thee my spirit flies, And on Thy watchful providence My cheerful hope relies. The shadow of Thy wings My soul in safety keeps; I follow where my Father leads, And He supports my steps.

  O God, my God, my all Thou art! Ere shines the dawn of rising day, Thy sovereign light within my heart, Thy all enlivening power display. For Thee my thirsty soul doth pant, While in this desert land I live; And hungry as I am, and faint, Thy love alone can comfort give. In a dry land, behold I place My whole desire on Thee, O Lord; And more I joy to gain Thy grace, Than all earth’s treasures can afford. More dear than life itself, Thy love My heart and tongue shall still employ And to declare Thy praise will prove My peace, my glory, and my joy. In blessing Thee with grateful songs My happy life shall glide away; The praise that to Thy Name belongs Hourly with lifted hands I’ll pay.   When mother love makes all things bright, When joy comes with the morning light, When children gather round their tree, Thou Christmas Babe, we sing of Thee. When manhood’s brows are bent in thought To learn what men of old have taught, When eager hands seek wisdom’s key, Wise Temple Child, we learn of Thee. When doubts assail, and perils fright, When, groping blindly in the night, We strive to read life’s mystery, Man of the Mount, we turn to Thee.   While Thee I seek, protecting Power, Be my vain wishes stilled; And may this consecrated hour With better hopes be filled. Thy love the power of thought bestowed; To Thee my thoughts would soar: Thy mercy o’er my life has flowed; That mercy I adore. In each event of life, how clear Thy ruling hand I see! Each blessing to my soul more dear, Because conferred by Thee. In every joy that crowns my days, In every pain I bear, My heart shall find delight in praise, Or seek relief in prayer.
