  Another day begun! Lord, grant us grace that we, Before the setting of the sun, Redeem the time for Thee. Another day of toil! To Thee we yield our powers; Keep Thou our souls from guilty soil Through all the passing hours. Another day of fear! For watchful is our foe, And sin is strong, and death is near, And short our time below. Another day of hope! For Thou art with us still, And Thine almighty strength can cope With all who seek our ill. Another day of grace To help us on our way! One step towards the resting-place, The eternal Sabbath-day.

  As the sun doth daily rise, Brightening all the morning skies, So to Thee with one accord Lift we up our hearts, O Lord. Day by day provide us food, For from Thee come all things good; Strength unto our souls afford From Thy living bread, O Lord. Be our guard in sin and strife; Be the leader of our life; Lest from Thee we stray abroad, Stay our wayward feet, O Lord. Quickened by the Spirit’s grace All Thy holy will to trace While we daily search Thy Word, Wisdom true impart, O Lord. Praise we, with the heavenly host, Father, Son and Holy Ghost; Thee would we with one accord Praise and magnify, O Lord.

  Father, we thank Thee for the night, And for the pleasant morning light; For rest and food and loving care, And all that makes the world so fair. Help us to do the things we should, To be to others kind and good; In all we do, in work or play, To love Thee better day by day.

  I with Thee would begin, O my Savior so dear, On the way that I still must pursue; I with Thee would begin every day granted here, As my earnest resolve I renew To be and remain Thine forever. I with Thee would begin and go forth in Thy Name, Which alone doth salvation bestow; Fold me close to Thy breast where found joy all who came, There is refuge for me, too, I know, Though all in this world is confusion. Let Thy Word all divine be my lamp in whose light I may constantly keep to Thy way; And each day wouldst Thou cleanse me anew, make me white In the blood shed for me on that day The cross Thou didst suffer, Lord Jesus. I with Thee would begin—yea, and hear one more prayer, I would close with Thee, too, my brief day, And when daylight has failed, let me sleep in Thy care, Until waking Thy child Thou dost say, “Come, live with Me ever in Heaven.”

  My opening eyes with rapture see The dawn of this returning day; My thoughts, O God, ascend to Thee, While thus my early vows I pay. I yield my heart to Thee alone, Nor would receive another guest: Eternal King, erect Thy throne, And reign sole monarch in my breast. O bid this trifling world retire, And drive each carnal thought away; Nor let me feel one vain desire, One sinful thought, through all the day.   Now that the daylight fills the sky, We lift our hearts to God on high, That He, in all we do or say, Would keep us free from harm today. May He restrain our tongues from strife, And shield from anger’s din our life, And guard with watchful care our eyes From earth’s absorbing vanities. O may our inmost hearts be pure, From thoughts of folly kept secure, And pride of sinful flesh subdued Through sparing use of daily food. So we, when this day’s work is o’er, And shades of night return once more, Our path of trial safely trod, Shall give the glory to our God. All praise to God the Father be, All praise, eternal Son, to Thee, Whom with the Spirit we adore Forever and forevermore.

  O Father, hear my morning prayer, Thine aid impart to me, That I may make my life today Acceptable to Thee. May this desire my spirit rule, And, as the moments fly, Something of good be born in me, Something of evil die. Some grace that seeks my heart to win, With shining victory meet; Some sin that strives for mastery Find overthrow complete.   In full assurance of Thy grace To Thee my prayers ascend In Thine abounding love and truth, O God, salvation send. Preserve my sinking soul, I pray, From tides of hatred save; Let not the waters overflow, Redeem me from the grave. Because Thy mercy, Lord, is good, O answer me in grace, And in the riches of Thy love O turn to me Thy face. Hide not Thy face from my distress, A speedy answer send; Draw near to me, my soul redeem, From all my foes defend. Well known to Thee is my reproach, My shame and my disgrace, The adversaries of my soul Are all before Thy face. My heart is broken by reproach, My soul is full of grief; I looked in vain for comforters, For pity and relief. They gave me bitter gall for food, And taunting words they spake, They gave me vinegar to drink, My burning thirst to slake. Their peace and plenty be their snare, In blindness let them grope; Thine indignation on them pour, And desolate their hope. Because they proudly persecute Those whom Thou, Lord, dost smite, Let them be blotted from Thy book And banished from Thy sight.

  Lord, hear me in distress, regard my suppliant cry, And in Thy faithfulness and righteousness reply. In judgment do not cause Thy servant to be tried; Before Thy holy laws no man is justified. The enemy has sought my soul in dust to tread; To darkness I am brought, forgotten as the dead. My spirit, crushed with grief, is sad and overborne; My heart finds no relief, but desolate I mourn. Recalling former days and all Thy wondrous deeds, The memory of Thy ways to hope and comfort leads. To Thee I stretch my hands, let me not plead in vain; I wait as weary lands wait for refreshing rain.   Unanswered yet? The prayers your lips have pleaded In agony of heart these many years? Does faith begin to fail, is hope departing, And think you all in vain those falling tears? Say not the Father hath not heard your prayer: You shall have your desire, sometime, somewhere, You shall have your desire, sometime, somewhere. Unanswered yet? Though when you first presented This one petition at the Father’s throne, It seemed you could not wait the time of asking, So urgent was your heart to make it known. Though years have passed since then, do not despair; The Lord will answer you, sometime, somewhere, The Lord will answer you, sometime, somewhere. Unanswered yet? Nay, do not say ungranted; Perhaps your part is not yet wholly done; The work began when first your prayer was uttered, And God will finish what He has begun. Faith cannot be unanswered; Her feet were firmly planted on the Rock; Amid the wildest storm prayer stands undaunted, Nor quail before the loudest thunder shock. She knows Omnipotence has heard her prayer, And cries, “It shall be done,” sometime, somewhere, And cries, “It shall be done,” sometime, somewhere.

  When morning lights the eastern skies, O Lord, Thy mercy show; On Thee alone my hope relies, Let me Thy kindness know.
