  Another day begun! Lord, grant us grace that we, Before the setting of the sun, Redeem the time for Thee. Another day of toil! To Thee we yield our powers; Keep Thou our souls from guilty soil Through all the passing hours. Another day of fear! For watchful is our foe, And sin is strong, and death is near, And short our time below. Another day of hope! For Thou art with us still, And Thine almighty strength can cope With all who seek our ill. Another day of grace To help us on our way! One step towards the resting-place, The eternal Sabbath-day.

  As the sun doth daily rise, Brightening all the morning skies, So to Thee with one accord Lift we up our hearts, O Lord. Day by day provide us food, For from Thee come all things good; Strength unto our souls afford From Thy living bread, O Lord. Be our guard in sin and strife; Be the leader of our life; Lest from Thee we stray abroad, Stay our wayward feet, O Lord. Quickened by the Spirit’s grace All Thy holy will to trace While we daily search Thy Word, Wisdom true impart, O Lord. Praise we, with the heavenly host, Father, Son and Holy Ghost; Thee would we with one accord Praise and magnify, O Lord.

I with Thee would begin—yea, and hear one more prayer, I would close with Thee, too, my brief day, And when daylight has failed, let me sleep in Thy care, Until waking Thy child Thou dost say, “Come, live with Me ever in Heaven.”

  My opening eyes with rapture see The dawn of this returning day; My thoughts, O God, ascend to Thee, While thus my early vows I pay.   Now that the daylight fills the sky, We lift our hearts to God on high, That He, in all we do or say, Would keep us free from harm today. May He restrain our tongues from strife, And shield from anger’s din our life, And guard with watchful care our eyes From earth’s absorbing vanities. O may our inmost hearts be pure, From thoughts of folly kept secure, And pride of sinful flesh subdued Through sparing use of daily food. So we, when this day’s work is o’er, And shades of night return once more, Our path of trial safely trod, Shall give the glory to our God. All praise to God the Father be, All praise, eternal Son, to Thee, Whom with the Spirit we adore Forever and forevermore.

  O Father, hear my morning prayer, Thine aid impart to me, That I may make my life today Acceptable to Thee.   Dread Jehovah, God of nations, From Thy temple in the skies, Hear Thy people’s supplications, Now for their deliverance rise.   Now may the God of power and grace Attend His people’s humble cry! Jehovah hears when Israel prays, And brings deliverance from on high. The Name of Jacob’s God defends Better than shields or brazen walls; He from His sanctuary sends Succor and strength, when Zion calls. Well He remembers our sighs, His love exceeds our best deserts; His love accepts the sacrifice Of humble groans and broken hearts. In His salvation is our hope, And in the Name of Israel’s God, Our troops shall lift their banners up Our navies spread their flags abroad. Some trust in horses trained for war, And some of chariots make their boasts; Our surest expectations are From Thee, the Lord of heav’nly hosts. O may the memory of Thy Name Inspire our armies for the fight! Our foes shall fall and die with shame, Or quit the field with shameful flight. Now save us, Lord, from slavish fear; Now let our hopes be firm and strong Till the salvation shall appear, And joy and triumph raise the song.

  In full assurance of Thy grace To Thee my prayers ascend In Thine abounding love and truth, O God, salvation send. Preserve my sinking soul, I pray, From tides of hatred save; Let not the waters overflow, Redeem me from the grave. Because Thy mercy, Lord, is good, O answer me in grace, And in the riches of Thy love O turn to me Thy face. Hide not Thy face from my distress, A speedy answer send; Draw near to me, my soul redeem, From all my foes defend.   Lord, hear me in distress, regard my suppliant cry, And in Thy faithfulness and righteousness reply. In judgment do not cause Thy servant to be tried; Before Thy holy laws no man is justified. The enemy has sought my soul in dust to tread; To darkness I am brought, forgotten as the dead. My spirit, crushed with grief, is sad and overborne; My heart finds no relief, but desolate I mourn.   Unanswered yet? The prayers your lips have pleaded In agony of heart these many years? Does faith begin to fail, is hope departing, And think you all in vain those falling tears? Say not the Father hath not heard your prayer: You shall have your desire, sometime, somewhere, You shall have your desire, sometime, somewhere. Unanswered yet? Though when you first presented This one petition at the Father’s throne, It seemed you could not wait the time of asking, So urgent was your heart to make it known. Faith cannot be unanswered; Her feet were firmly planted on the Rock; Amid the wildest storm prayer stands undaunted, Nor quail before the loudest thunder shock.
