  Hark! from the tombs a doleful sound; My ears, attend the cry; “Ye living men, come view the ground Where you must shortly lie. “Princes, this clay must be your bed, In spite of all your towers; The tall, the wise, the rev’rend head Must lie as low as ours!” Great God! is this our certain doom? And are we still secure? Still walking downward to our tomb, And yet prepare no more? Grant us the powers of quick’ning grace, To fit our souls to fly, Then, when we drop this dying flesh, We’ll rise above the sky.

  There’s a royal banner given for display To the soldiers of the King; As an ensign fair we lift it up today, While as ransomed ones we sing. Refrain Marching on, marching on, For Christ count everything but loss! And to crown Him King, we’ll toil and sing, ’Neath the banner of the cross! Though the foe may rage and gather as the flood, Let the standard be displayed; And beneath its folds, as soldiers of the Lord, For the truth be not dismayed! Refrain Over land and sea, wherever man may dwell, Make the glorious tidings known; Of the crimson banner now the story tell, While the Lord shall claim His own!   Hold up the banner of the Lord, And let it ne’er be taken; Sound forth the message of His Word To all of hope forsaken. Hold up the banner where He leads, Nor once forget the world’s great needs; To grander faith awaken. Hold up the cross of Christ the Lord, Before the lost and dying; Tell them to look, e’er point them t’ward Him, Who Himself denying, Gave His great life from love of us, And suffered on the cruel cross, To cure all sin and sighing. Hold up the Word of Christ the Lord, The Word of consolation; Glad news of peace—once lost—restored; Of help in each temptation. Hence let the light shine far away, That all who in deep error stray, From sin may find salvation. Go on, true children of the Lord, From grace to grace go onward; God’s host will constant help afford, Our Captain’s word is “forward.” Never to sloth or fear give way, In work and prayer, each golden day, Go onward, forward, heav’nward.
