Psalms 106:39

Context

106:39 They were defiled by their deeds,

and unfaithful in their actions. 9

1 tn Heb “our heart did not turn backward.” Cf. Ps 78:57.

2 tn Heb “and our steps did [not] turn aside from your path.” The negative particle is understood by ellipsis (see the preceding line). God’s “path” refers to his commands, i.e., the moral pathway he has prescribed for the psalmist. See Pss 17:5; 25:4.

3 tn Or “for.”

4 sn The following line defines the phrase far from you in a spiritual sense. Those “far” from God are those who are unfaithful and disloyal to him.

5 tn Heb “everyone who commits adultery from you.”

6 tn Heb “and their heart was not firm with him.”

7 tn Heb “break”; “make ineffectual.” Some prefer to emend אָפִיר (’afir; the Hiphil of פָּרַר, parar, “to break”) to אָסִיר (’asir; the Hiphil of סוּר, sur, “to turn aside”), a verb that appears in 2 Sam 7:15.

8 tn Heb “and I will not deal falsely with my faithfulness.”

9 tn Heb “and they committed adultery in their actions.” This means that they were unfaithful to the Lord (see Ps 73:27).
