Psalms 113:5

Context

113:5 Who can compare to the Lord our God,

who sits on a high throne? 9

1 tn The prefixed verbal form is a preterite (without vav [ו] consecutive).

2 tn Heb “for what is not wealth.”

3 tn Heb “you did not multiply their purchase prices.”

4 tn Heb “said.”

5 sn Normally in the OT the title Most High belongs to the God of Israel, but in this context, where the mythological overtones are so strong, it probably refers to the Canaanite high god El (see v. 1, as well as Isa 14:13).

6 tn The singular is used in a representative sense, with the typical godly person being in view.

7 sn The cedars of the Lebanon forest were well-known in ancient Israel for their immense size.

8 tn Heb “the high mountains [are] for the goats.”

9 tn Heb “the one who makes high to sit.”
