124:6 The Lord deserves praise, 11

1 sn The psalmist warns his enemies that they need to tremble with fear before God and repudiate their sinful ways.

2 tn Heb “say in your heart(s) on your bed(s) and wail/lament.” The verb דֹמּוּ (dommu) is understood as a form of דָמָם (“wail, lament”) in sorrow and repentance. Another option is to take the verb from II דָמָם (damam, “be quiet”); cf. NIV, NRSV “be silent.”

3 tn Heb “the one who places our soul in life.”

4 tn Or “islands.” The term here refers metonymically to those people who dwell in these regions.

5 sn As they bow down before him, it will appear that his enemies are licking the dust.

6 sn Tarshish was a distant western port, the precise location of which is uncertain.

7 sn Sheba was located in Arabia.

8 sn Seba was located in Africa.

9 tn Heb “and I sent him away in the stubbornness of their heart.”

10 tn Heb “they walked in their counsel.” The prefixed verbal form is either preterite (“walked”) or a customary imperfect (“were walking”).

11 tn Heb “blessed [be] the Lord.”

12 tn Heb “[the one] who.”
