Psalms 41:7

Context

41:7 All who hate me whisper insults about me to one another; 5

they plan ways to harm me.

1 sn The psalmist warns his enemies that they need to tremble with fear before God and repudiate their sinful ways.

2 tn Heb “say in your heart(s) on your bed(s) and wail/lament.” The verb דֹמּוּ (dommu) is understood as a form of דָמָם (“wail, lament”) in sorrow and repentance. Another option is to take the verb from II דָמָם (damam, “be quiet”); cf. NIV, NRSV “be silent.”

3 tn Heb “for they do not speak peace.”

4 tn Heb “but against the quiet ones of the land words of deceit they plan.” The imperfect verbal forms in v. 20 highlight their characteristic behavior.

5 tn Heb “together against me they whisper, all those who hate me.” The Hitpael of לָחַשׁ (lakhash) refers here to whispering to one another (see 2 Sam 12:19).
