Psalms 82:3

Context

82:3 Defend the cause of the poor and the fatherless! 12

Vindicate the oppressed and suffering!

1 sn Though he is confident that the Lord is aware of his situation (see v. 22a), the psalmist compares the Lord’s inactivity to sleep and urges him to wake up.

2 tn Heb “for my justice.”

3 tn Heb “for my cause.”

4 tn Heb “rejoice.”

5 tn Heb “draw out to full length.”

6 tn Heb “to those who know you.” The Hebrew verb יָדַע (yada’, “know”) is used here of those who “know” the Lord in the sense that they recognize his royal authority and obey his will (see Jer 22:16).

7 tn Heb “and your justice to.” The verb “extend” is understood by ellipsis in the second line (see the previous line).

8 tn Heb “the pure of heart.” The “heart” is here viewed as the seat of one’s moral character and motives. The “pure of heart” are God’s faithful followers who trust in and love the Lord and, as a result, experience his deliverance (see Pss 7:10; 11:2; 32:11; 64:10; 94:15; 97:11).

9 tn Heb “and he will bring out like light your vindication, and your just cause like noonday.”

10 tn Heb “place sin upon their sin.”

11 tn Heb “let them not come into your vindication.”

12 tn The Hebrew noun יָתוֹם (yatom) refers to one who has lost his father (not necessarily his mother, see Ps 109:9). Because they were so vulnerable and were frequently exploited, fatherless children are often mentioned as epitomizing the oppressed (see Pss 10:14; 68:5; 94:6; 146:9; as well as Job 6:27; 22:9; 24:3, 9; 29:12; 31:17, 21).
