34:7 The Lord’s angel camps around

the Lord’s 1  loyal followers 2  and delivers them. 3

Psalms 34:22

Context

34:22 The Lord rescues his servants; 4

all who take shelter in him escape punishment. 5

1 tn Heb “his”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

2 tn Heb “those who fear him.”

3 tn The prefixed verb with vav (ו) consecutive here carries the same generalizing force as the active participle in the first line. See GKC 329 §111.u.

4 tn Heb “redeems the life of his servants.” The Hebrew participial form suggests such deliverance is characteristic.

5 tn “Taking shelter” in the Lord is an idiom for seeking his protection. Seeking his protection presupposes and even demonstrates the subject’s loyalty to the Lord. In the psalms those who “take shelter” in the Lord are contrasted with the wicked and equated with those who love, fear, and serve the Lord (Pss 2:12; 5:11-12; 31:19).
