  Look down upon us, God of grace, And send from Thy most holy place The quickening Spirit all divine, On us and on this bread and wine. O may His overshadowing Make now for us this bread we bring The body of Thy Son our Lord, This cup His blood for sinners poured.

  O heavenly King, look down from above; Assist us to sing Thy mercy and love. So sweetly o’erflowing, so plenteous the store, Thou still art bestowing, and giving us more. O God of our life, we hallow Thy Name, Our business and strife is Thee to proclaim. Accept our thanksgiving for creating grace; The living, the living shall show forth Thy praise. Our Father and Lord, almighty art Thou; Preserved by Thy Word, we worship Thee now; The bountiful Donor of all we enjoy, Our tongues, to Thine honor, and lives we employ. But, oh, above all Thy kindness we praise, From sin and from thrall which saves the lost race; Thy Son Thou hast given the world to redeem, And bring us to Heaven whose trust is in Him.

  Lord, what was man, when made at first, Adam the offspring of the dust, That Thou shouldst set him and his race But just below an angel’s place? That Thou shouldst raise his nature so, And make him lord of all below; Make every beast and bird submit, And lay the fishes at his feet? But O! what brighter glories wait To crown the Second Adam’s state! What honors shall Thy Son adorn, Who condescended to be born! See Him below His angels made; See Him in dust amongst the dead, To save a ruined world from sin; But He shall reign with power divine. The world to come, redeemed from all The mis’ries that attend the fall, New made and glorious, shall submit At our exalted Savior’s feet.

  When the great Judge, supreme and just, Shall once inquire for blood, The humble souls that mourn in dust Shall find a faithful God. He from the dreadful gates of death Does His own children raise; In Zion’s gates, with cheerful breath, They sing their Father’s praise. His foes shall fall, with heedless feet, Into the pit they made; And sinners perish in the net That their own hands had spread. Thus, by Thy judgments, mighty God, Are Thy deep counsels known; When men of mischief are destroyed, The snare must be their own. The wicked shall sink down to hell; Thy wrath devour the lands That dare forget Thee, or rebel Against Thy known commands. Though saints to sore distress are brought, And wait and long complain, Their cries shall not be still forgot, Nor shall their hopes be vain. Rise, great Redeemer, from Thy seat, To judge and save the poor; Let nations tremble at Thy feet, And man prevail no more. Thy thunder shall affright the proud, And put their hearts to pain; Make them confess that Thou art God, And they but feeble men.

Where’er Thy Name is blest, Where’er Thy people meet, There I delight in Thee to rest, And find Thy mercy sweet. Light Thou my weary way, Lead Thou my wandering feet, That while I stay on earth I may Still find Thy mercy sweet. Thus shall the heavenly host Hear all my songs repeat To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, My joy, Thy mercy sweet.

  The Lord Who has remembered us His blessing will bestow; All those who fear His holy Name, His loving care shall know. The great Creator blesses you With gifts of boundless worth; The heavens He claims, but gives to man Dominion in the earth. The silent dead praise not the Lord, The grave no song can raise; But we will bless Him evermore, Let all proclaim His praise.

  Now praise we great and famous men, The fathers named in story; And praise the Lord, who now as then Reveals in man His glory. Praise we the wise and brave and strong, Who graced their generation, Who helped the right, and fought the wrong, And made our folk a nation. Praise we the great of heart and mind, The singers sweetly gifted, Whose music like a mighty wind The souls of men uplifted. Praise we the peaceful men of skill, Who builded homes of beauty, And, rich in art, made richer still The brotherhood of duty. Praise we the glorious names we know, And they whose names have perished, Lost, in the haze of long ago, In silent love be cherished. In peace their sacred ashes rest, Fulfilled their day’s endeavor; They blessed the earth, and they are blessed Of God and man forever.
