Psalms 17:9

• [Psa 17:9] Again, As Evening’s Shadow Falls

  Again, as evening’s shadow falls, We gather in these hallowed walls; And vesper hymn and vesper prayer Rise mingling on the holy air. May struggling hearts that seek release Here find the rest of God’s own peace; And, strengthened here by hymn and prayer, Lay down the burden and the care. O God, our Light! to Thee we bow; Within all shadows standest Thou; Give deeper calm than night can bring; Give sweeter songs than lips can sing. Life’s tumult we must meet again, We cannot at the shrine remain; But in the spirit’s secret cell May hymn and prayer forever dwell.

• [Psa 40:11] Thy Tender Mercies, O My Lord

  Thy tender mercies, O my Lord, Withhold not, I implore; But let Thy kindness and Thy truth Preserve me evermore. For countless ills have compassed me, My sinful deeds arise; Yea, they have overtaken me; I dare not raise my eyes. My sins are more than I can count, My heart has failed for grief; Be pleased, O Lord, to rescue me, O haste to my relief. Be those who seek to hurt my soul Dismayed and put to flight, And they themselves be put to shame Who in my woe delight. Let all who seek Thee now rejoice, Yea, glad in Thee abide, And, loving Thy salvation, say, The Lord be magnified. My lowly state and bitter need The Lord has not forgot; Thou art my Savior and my help, Come, Lord, and tarry not.

• [Psa 140:1] Deliver Me From Evil

  Deliver me from evil, preserve me, Lord, from wrong; Against the foes that gather be Thou my Helper strong; From those who plot to hurt me and spread the treacherous snare, Preserve me, Lord, and keep me safeguarded in Thy care. O Lord, I have confessed Thee to be my God alone; O hear my supplication, and be Thy mercy shown; O God the Lord, my Savior, my Shield amid the strife, Let not the wicked triumph who plot against my life. Let evil smite the evil, and cause their overthrow; The needy and afflicted the Lord will help, I know; Thy saints, redeemed from evil, their thanks to Thee shall give; The righteous and the upright shall in Thy presence live.

• [Psa 140:1] Lord, From The Ill And Froward Man

  Lord, from the ill and froward man Give me deliverance, And do Thou safe preserve me from The man of violence: Who in their heart mischievous things Are meditating e’er; And they for war assembled are Continually together. Much like unto a serpent’s tongue Their tongues they sharp do make; And underneath their lips there lies The poison of a snake. Lord, keep me from the wicked’s hands, From violent men me save; Who utterly to overthrow My goings purposed have. The proud for me a snare have hid, And cords; yea, they a net Have by the wayside for me spread; They gins for me have set. I said unto the Lord, Thou art My God: unto the cry Of all my supplications, Lord, do Thine ear apply. O God the Lord, who art the strength Of my salvation: A cov’ring in the day of war My head Thou hast put on. Unto the wicked man, O Lord, His wishes do not grant; Nor further Thou his ill device, Lest they themselves should vaunt. As for the head and chief of those About that compass me, E’en by the mischief of their lips Let Thou them covered be. Let burning coals upon them fall, Them throw in fiery flame, And in deep pits, that they no more May rise out of the same. Let not an evil speaker be On earth establishèd: Mischief shall hunt the violent man, Till he be ruinèd. I know God will th’afflicted’s cause Maintain, and poor men’s right. Surely the just shall praise Thy Name; Th’upright dwell in Thy sight.
