• [Psa 35:13] The Fast, As Taught By Holy Lore

  The fast, as taught by holy lore, We keep in solemn course once more; The fast to all men known, and bound In forty days of yearly round. The law and seers that were of old In divers ways this Lent foretold Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide, In after ages sanctified. More sparing therefore let us make The words we speak, the food we take, Our sleep and mirth, and closer barred Be every sense in holy guard. In prayer together let us fall, And cry for mercy, one and all, And weep before the Judge’s feet, And His avenging wrath entreat. Thy grace have we offended sore, By sins, O God, which we deplore; But pour upon us from on high, O pardoning One, Thy clemency. Remember Thou, though frail we be, That yet Thine handiwork are we; Nor let the honor of Thy Name Be by another put to shame. Forgive the sin that we have wrought; Increase the good that we have sought; That we at length, our wanderings o’er, May please Thee here and evermore. We pray Thee, holy Trinity, One God, unchanging Unity, That we from this our abstinence May reap the fruits of penitence.

Psalms 53:4

• [Psa 53:4] Are All The Foes Of Sion Fools

  Are all the foes of Sion fools, Who thus devour her saints? Do they not know her Savior rules, And pities her complaints? They shall be seized with sad surprise; For God’s revenging arm Scatters the bones of them that rise To do His children harm. In vain the sons of Satan boast Of armies in array; When God has first despised their host They fall an easy prey. O for a word from Zion’s King, Her captives to restore! Jacob with all his tribes shall sing, And Judah weep no more.

  In vain the powers of darkness try To work the Church’s ill, The Friend of sinners reigns on high, And checks them at His will. Though mischief in their hearts may dwell, And on their tongues deceit, A word of His their pride can quell, And all their aims defeat. My trust is in His grace alone; His house shall be my home. How sweet His mercies past to own, And hope for more to come.

• [Psa 139:9] Take The Wings Of The Morning

  Take the wings of the morning; speed quickly thy flight To Jesus, thy Savior, thy hope and thy light; The fount of His mercy is open for thee, Go wash and be cleaned in its waters so free. Refrain Take the wings of the morning and fly, Ere the darkness shall cover the sky; Fly away from the shadows that over thee roll, And find in thy Savior the home of thy soul. Fly away to thy Savior, He waits to forgive; One look of His love, and thy spirit shall live; Thy faith will secure thee His blessing divine; Go plead thou His merits, and peace will be thine.   Thou Lord of hosts, whose guiding hand Has brought us here before Thy face, Our spirits wait for Thy command, Our silent hearts implore Thy peace. Those spirits lay their noblest powers As offerings on Thy holy shrine. Thine was the strength that nourished ours; The soldiers of the cross are Thine. While watching on our arms at night We saw Thine angels around us move. We heard Thy call, we felt Thy light, And followed, trusting, to Thy love. Send us wherever Thou wilt, O Lord! Through rugged toil and wearying fight. Thy conquering love shall be our sword, And faith in Thee our truest might. Send down Thy constant aid, we pray. Be Thy pure angels with us still. Thy truth, be that our firmest stay; Our only rest, to do Thy will.

  Round me falls the night; Savior, be my Light: Through the hours in darkness shrouded Let me see Thy face unclouded; Let Thy glory shine in this heart of mine. Earthly work is done, earthly sounds are none; Rest in sleep and silence seeking, Let my hear Thee softly speaking; In my spirit’s ear whisper “I am near.” Darkened now each ray o’er the traveler’s way; Let me know that Thou hast found me, Let me feel Thine arms around me, Sure from every ill Thou wilt guard me still. Blessèd heavenly Light, shining through earth’s night; Voice, that oft of love hast told me; Arms, so strong to clasp and hold me; Thou Thy watch wilt keep, Savior, o’er my sleep.

• [Psa 139:15] Song Of Life

  Not in darkness nor in mystery, No depth of heart or mind, Nowhere in heav’n or earth or hell Can I run and Thou not find; Transcendent thoughts too deep for me Surround on every side. Thy mighty wisdom, O my God, Moves ocean, wind and tide. With skillful and with hidden hand Thou workest in the womb, And there, in dark and tiny space, Makest unseen life to bloom. Fashioned fearfully and wonderf’ly, Thy knowledge to display, Thine image bearer grows in night Which is to Thee as day. How I love Thy wisdom and Thy thoughts Unnumbered as the sands. I joy that all my earthly trials Are written by Thy hands. And I trust that strong benevolence That never leaves my side— Thy holy, gracious presence is My treasure and my guide.
