To teach to us the Father’s love, And the Evil One’s cruel hate, To show the path round many snares, The way to the pearly gate. Given to all who truly seek, For wisdom, meaning and love, Instruction in life’s mysteries, The way to Heaven above. And once you grasp the lamp, do not Hoard that brilliant, precious light, But share with all the radiant beam, And watch it conquer the night.

  How precious is the book divine, By inspiration giv’n; Bright as a lamp its pages shine To guide our souls to Heav’n. Its light descending from above, Our gloomy world to cheer, Displays a Savior’s boundless love, And brings His glories near. Refrain Oh precious book of light and life Thou source of truth and love, In Thee we view God’s matchless grace, And all His goodness prove, Oh precious book whose light e’er shines With bright and cheering ray, To guide our souls until the dawn Of the eternal day.   Lamp of our feet whereby we trace Our path when wont to stray; Stream from the fount of heav’nly grace, Brook by the traveler’s way. Bread of our souls whereon we feed, True manna from on high; Our guide and chart wherein we read Of realms beyond the sky. Pillar of fire, through watches dark, Or radiant cloud by day; When waves would break our tossing bark, Our anchor and our stay. Word of the ever living God, Will of His glorious Son; Without Thee, how could earth be trod Or Heav’n itself be won?   Lead, kindly Light, amid th’encircling gloom, lead Thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead Thou me on! Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see The distant scene; one step enough for me. I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou shouldst lead me on; I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead Thou me on! I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears, Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years! So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still will lead me on.
