  Prayer is the key for the bending knee To open the morn’s first hours; See the incense rise to the starry skies, Like perfume from the flow’rs. Not a soul so sad, nor a heart so glad When cometh the shades of night, But the daybreak song will the joy prolong, And some darkness turn to light. Take the golden key in your hand and see, As the night-tide drifts away, How its blessèd hold is a crown of gold, Thro’ the weary hours of day. When the shadows fall, and the vesper call Is sobbing its low refrain, ’Tis a garland sweet to the toil-dent feet, And an antidote for pain. Soon our toils will cease, and will come release; Life’s tears shall be wiped away, As the pearl gates swing, and the gold harps ring, And we enter eternal day.

• [Psa 77:2] In Time Of Tribulation

  In time of tribulation, hear, Lord, my feeble cries; With humble supplication to Thee my spirit flies; My heart with grief is breaking, scarce can my voice complain; Mine eyes with tears kept waking, still watch and weep in vain. The days of old, in vision, bring banished bliss to view; The years of lost fruition, their joys in pangs renew; Remembered songs of gladness, through nights lone silence brought, Strike notes of deeper sadness, and stir desponding thought. Hath God cast off forever? Can time His truth impair? His tender mercy never shall I presume to share? Hath He His loving kindness shut up in endless wrath? No; this is mine own blindness, that cannot see His path. I call to recollection the years of His right hand; And, strong in His protection, again through faith I stand; Thy deeds, O Lord, are wondrous; holy are all Thy ways; The secret place of thunder shall utter forth Thy praise. Thee, with the tribes assembled, O God, the billows saw; They saw Thee, and they trembled, turned, and stood still with awe; The clouds shot hail and lightning; the earth reeled to and fro; Thy fiery pillar brightened the gulf of gloom below. Thy way is in great waters, Thy footsteps are not known; Let Adam’s sons and daughters confide in Thee alone: Through the wild sea Thou leadest Thy chosen flock of yore; Still on the waves Thou treadest, and Thy redeemed pass o’er.

  Come in, Thou blessèd, honored Lord! By earth, by Heav’n, by all, adored! We hail Thee, welcome! Take Thy throne, and in Thy Zion reign alone. Our only Lord and God Thou art! Reign Thou the Sovereign of our hearts, Thou King of glory ever blest, By angels and by men confessed.   Lord of our life, God Whom we fear, Unknown, yet known; unseen, yet near; Breath of our breath, in Thee we live; Life of our life, our praise receive. Thine eye detects the sparrow’s fall; Thy heart of love expands for all; Our throbbing life is full of Thee; Throned in Thy vast infinity. Shine in our darkness, Light of light, Our minds illumine, disperse our night; Make us responsive to Thy will; Our souls with all Thy fullness fill. We love Thy Name; we heed Thy rod; Thy Word our law, O gracious God! We wait Thy will; on Thee we call: Our light, our life, our love, our all.
