Proverbs 6:5

Context

6:5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a snare, 1

and like a bird from the trap 2  of the fowler.

Proverbs 11:6

Context

11:6 The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, 3

but the faithless will be captured 4  by their own desires. 5

1 tn Heb “from the hand.” Most translations supply “of the hunter.” The word “hand” can signify power, control; so the meaning is that of a gazelle freeing itself from a snare or a trap that a hunter set.

2 tc Heb “hand” (so KJV, NAB, NRSV). Some mss and versions have it as “trap,” which may very well represent an interpretation too.

3 sn The contrast is between being rescued or delivered (נָצַל, natsal) and being captured (לָכַד, lakhad). Righteousness is freeing; [evil] desires are enslaving.

4 tn Heb “taken captive” (so NRSV); NIV, TEV “are trapped.”

5 tn Heb “but by the desire of the faithless are they taken captive.”
