Context
9:19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle many days, then the Israelites obeyed the instructions 1  of the Lord and did not journey.

Numbers 13:18

Context
13:18 and see 2  what the land is like, 3  and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, few or many,

1 tn This is the same Hebrew expression that was used earlier for the Levites “keeping their charge” or more clearly, “fulfilling their obligations” to take care of the needs of the people and the sanctuary. It is a general expression using שָׁמַר (shamar) followed by its cognate noun מִשְׁמֶרֶת (mishmeret).

2 tn The form is the perfect tense with vav (ו) consecutive; the word therefore carries the volitional mood of the preceding imperatives. It may be either another imperative, or it may be subordinated as a purpose clause.

3 tn Heb “see the land, what it is.”
