Numbers 30:6

Context
Vows Made by Married Women

30:6 “And if she marries a husband while under a vow, 9  or she uttered 10  anything impulsively by which she has pledged herself,

1 tn Heb “he.” The antecedent has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

2 tn Heb “took up.”

3 tn The verb probably means “pay attention” in this verse.

4 tn Heb “and he took up his oracle and said.”

5 tn The word נְאֻם (nÿum) is an “oracle.” It is usually followed by a subjective genitive, indicating the doer of the action. The word could be rendered “says,” but this translations is more specific.

6 tn The Greek version reads “the one who sees truly.” The word has been interpreted in both ways, “shut” or “open.”

7 tn Heb “and he took up his oracle and said.”

8 sn A pun is made on the name Kenite by using the word “your nest” (קִנֶּךָ, qinnekha); the location may be the rocky cliffs overlooking Petra.

9 tn Heb “and her vows are upon her.” It may be that the woman gets married while her vows are still unfulfilled.

10 tn The Hebrew text indicates that this would be some impetuous vow that she uttered with her lips, a vow that her husband, whether new or existing, would not approve of. Several translate it “a binding obligation rashly uttered.”
