Nehemiah 1:3

Context

1:3 They said to me, “The remnant that remains from the exile there in the province are experiencing considerable 1  adversity and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem lies breached, and its gates have been burned down!” 2 

Nehemiah 6:16

Context
6:16 When all our enemies heard and all the nations who were around us saw 3  this, they were greatly disheartened. 4  They knew that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.

Nehemiah 8:12

8:12 So all the people departed to eat and drink and to share their food 5  with others 6  and to enjoy tremendous joy, 7  for they had gained insight in the matters that had been made known to them.

Nehemiah 13:10

Context

13:10 I also discovered that the grain offerings for the Levites had not been provided, and that as a result the Levites and the singers who performed this work had all gone off to their fields.

1 tn Heb “great.”

2 tn Heb “have been burned with fire” (so also in Neh 2:17). The expression “burned with fire” is redundant in contemporary English; the translation uses “burned down” for stylistic reasons.

3 tc The MT understands the root here to be יָרֵא (yare’, “to fear”) rather than רָאָה (raah, “to see”).

4 tn Heb “they greatly fell [i.e., were cast down] in their own eyes.” Some scholars suggest emending the reading of the MT, וַיִּפְּלוּ (vayyipÿlu) to וַיִּפָּלֵא (vayyippale’, “it was very extraordinary in their eyes”).

5 tn Heb “to send portions.”

6 tn The Hebrew text does not include the phrase “with others” but it has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

7 tn Heb “to make great joy.”
