Micah 1:13

Context

1:13 Residents of Lachish, 1  hitch the horses to the chariots!

You 2  influenced Daughter Zion 3  to sin, 4

for Israel’s rebellious deeds can be traced back 5  to you!

Micah 3:2

Context

3:2 yet you 6  hate what is good, 7

and love what is evil. 8

You flay my people’s skin 9

and rip the flesh from their bones. 10

Micah 7:20

Context

7:20 You will be loyal to Jacob

and extend your loyal love to Abraham, 11

which you promised on oath to our ancestors 12

in ancient times. 13

1 sn The place name Lachish sounds like the Hebrew word for “team [of horses].”

2 tn Heb “she”; this has been translated as second person (“you”) in keeping with the direct address to the residents of Lachish in the previous line.

3 sn The epithet Daughter Zion pictures the city of Jerusalem as a young lady.

4 tn Heb “She was the beginning of sin for Daughter Zion.”

5 tn Heb “for in you was found the transgressions of Israel.”

6 tn Heb “the ones who.”

7 tn Or “good.”

8 tn Or “evil.”

9 tn Heb “their skin from upon them.” The referent of the pronoun (“my people,” referring to Jacob and/or the house of Israel, with the Lord as the speaker) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

10 tn Heb “and their flesh from their bones.”

sn Micah compares the social injustice perpetrated by the house of Jacob/Israel to cannibalism, because it threatens the very lives of the oppressed.

11 tn More literally, “You will extend loyalty to Jacob, and loyal love to Abraham.

12 tn Heb “our fathers.” The Hebrew term refers here to more distant ancestors, not immediate parents.

13 tn Heb “which you swore [or, “pledged”] to our fathers from days of old.”
