Matthew 9:18

Context
Restoration and Healing

9:18 As he was saying these things, a ruler came, bowed low before him, and said, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and she will live.”

Matthew 11:19

Context
11:19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him, 1  a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors 2  and sinners!’ 3  But wisdom is vindicated 4  by her deeds.” 5

Matthew 20:21

Context
20:21 He said to her, “What do you want?” She replied, 6  “Permit 7  these two sons of mine to sit, one at your 8  right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”

Matthew 21:2

Context
21:2 telling them, “Go to the village ahead of you. 9  Right away you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.

1 tn Grk “Behold a man.”

2 sn See the note on tax collectors in 5:46.

3 sn Neither were they happy with Jesus (the Son of Man), even though he was the opposite of John and associated freely with people like tax collectors and sinners. Either way, God’s messengers were subject to complaint.

4 tn Or “shown to be right.”

5 tc Most witnesses (B2 C D L Θ Ë1 33 Ï lat) have “children” (τέκνων, teknwn) here instead of “deeds” (ἔργων, ergwn), but since “children” is the reading of the parallel in Luke 7:35, scribes would be motivated to convert the less colorful “deeds” into more animate offspring of wisdom. Further, ἔργων enjoys support from א B* W (Ë13) as well as early versional and patristic support.

6 tn Grk “said to him.”

7 tn Grk “Say that.”

8 tc A majority of witnesses read σου (sou, “your”) here, perhaps for clarification. At the same time, it is possible that the pronoun dropped out through haplography or was excised because of perceived redundancy (there are two other such pronouns in the verse) by א B. Either way, the translation adds it due to the requirements of English style. NA27 includes σου here.

9 tn Grk “the village lying before you” (BDAG 530 s.v. κατέναντι 2.b).
