Matthew 11:17

Context

11:17 ‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; 3

we wailed in mourning, 4  yet you did not weep.’

Matthew 23:8

Context
23:8 But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher and you are all brothers.

1 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

2 tn Here the English word “penny” is used as opposed to the parallel in Luke 12:59 where “cent” appears since the Greek word there is different and refers to a different but similar coin.

sn The penny here was a quadrans, a Roman copper coin worth 1/64 of a denarius (L&N 6.78). The parallel passage in Luke 12:59 mentions the lepton, equal to one-half of a quadrans and thus the smallest coin available.

3 snWe played the flute for you, yet you did not dance…’ The children of this generation were making the complaint (see vv. 18-19) that others were not playing the game according to the way they played the music. John and Jesus did not follow “their tune.” Jesus’ complaint was that this generation wanted things their way, not God’s.

4 tn The verb ἐθρηνήσαμεν (eqrhnhsamen) refers to the loud wailing and lamenting used to mourn the dead in public in 1st century Jewish culture.
