  When o’er the fame of friend or foe, The shadow of disgrace shall fall; instead Of words of blame, or fatal blow— Let something good be said. Refrain And so I charge ye by the thorny crown, And by the cross on which the Savior bled, And by your own soul’s hope of fair renown: Let something be good said. Forget not grace, no sinner yet May fall so low but Christ can lift his head, While cheeks of shame with tears are wet; Let something be good said. Refrain No generous heart may turn aside To deeds of love—if they in sin be dead, But may awaken glorified, If something good be said. Refrain If cruel words embitter thee, Turn to the cross on Calvary, where said The Savior: “O forgive,” and see That something good be said. Refrain

  Think gently of the erring one; O let us not forget, However darkly stained by sin, He is our brother yet! Heir of the same inheritance, Child of the selfsame God, He hath but stumbled in the path We have in weakness trod. Speak gently to the erring ones: We yet may lead them back, With holy words, and tones of love, From misery’s thorny track. Forget not, brother, thou hast sinned, And sinful yet may’st be; Deal gently with the erring heart, As God has dealt with thee.

  Never let a shade of care rest on your brow, You can have the Savior’s helping hand just now; He has promised if His Word you will believe, That according to your faith you shall receive. Refrain Claim the promise, plead it o’er and o’er; On His Word lay hold as ne’er before; Claim the promise, plead it o’er and o’er; Let your faith be mightier than e’er before. He has called you in the world to shine for Him, Never need the brightness of your life grow dim; He has promised evermore He will bestow All that you may need to keep your light aglow. Refrain When the erring feet you seek to guide aright From the paths of darkness into His own light, He has promised pow’r to give you from above As you tell the story of His wondrous love. • [Mat 25:4] World Is Sad With Hopes That Die, The

  The world is sad with hopes that die, With joys that gleam and then go by, And dim the mortal eyes that gaze On setting suns of parting days. Better the hope, the joy, the light For spiritual heart and sight! For they whose life is hid on high Shall never part and never die. They never part! that saintly band, Heirs of the heavenly, holy land; Whom God the Spirit hath made one With God the Father and the Son. They never die! the deathly strife But ushers them to glorious life: From their last enemy they gain Their birth to bliss, their end to pain. But woe to them whose hearts are given To joys and treasures not of Heaven; Their wild awaking is to shame, The second death in endless flame. O Jesu, teach our hearts to soar And grasp those things which are before, That after death our life may be The immortality with Thee!
