Matthew 3:10

Context
3:10 Even now the ax is laid at 1  the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Matthew 13:23

Context
13:23 But as for the seed sown on good soil, this is the person who hears the word and understands. He bears fruit, yielding a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown.” 2

Matthew 21:19

Context
21:19 After noticing a fig tree 3  by the road he went to it, but found nothing on it except leaves. He said to it, “Never again will there be fruit from you!” And the fig tree withered at once.

Matthew 26:29

Context
26:29 I 4  tell you, from now on I will not drink of this fruit 5  of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

1 sn Laid at the root. That is, placed and aimed, ready to begin cutting.

2 tn The Greek is difficult to translate because it switches from a generic “he” to three people within this generic class (thus, something like: “Who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one instance a hundred times, in another, sixty times, in another, thirty times”).

3 tn Grk “one fig tree.”

sn The fig tree is a variation on the picture of a vine as representing the nation; see Isa 5:1-7.

4 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

5 tn Grk “produce” (“the produce of the vine” is a figurative expression for wine).
