Matthew 21:23

Context
The Authority of Jesus

21:23 Now after Jesus 1  entered the temple courts, 2  the chief priests and elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority 3  are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”

Matthew 9:8

Context
9:8 When 4  the crowd saw this, they were afraid 5  and honored God who had given such authority to men. 6

Matthew 28:18

Context
28:18 Then Jesus came up and said to them, 7  “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

1 tn Grk “he.”

2 tn Grk “the temple.”

3 tn On this phrase, see BDAG 844 s.v. ποῖος 2.a.γ.1

4 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

5 tc Most witnesses (C L Θ 0233 Ë13 Ï) have ἐθαύμασαν (eqaumasan; “marveled, were amazed”) instead of ἐφοβήθησαν (efobhqhsan) here, effectively turning the fearful reaction into one of veneration. But the harder reading is well supported by א B D W 0281 Ë1 33 892 1424 al lat co and thus is surely authentic.

6 tn Grk “people.” The plural of ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpo") usually indicates people in general, but the singular is used in the expression “Son of Man.” There is thus an ironic allusion to Jesus’ statement in v. 6: His self-designation as “Son of Man” is meant to be unique, but the crowd regards it simply as meaning “human, person.” To maintain this connection for the English reader the plural ἀνθρώποις (anqrwpoi") has been translated here as “men” rather than as the more generic “people.”

7 tn Grk “coming, Jesus spoke to them, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn, “saying”) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated. Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.
