Matthew 24:13

Context
24:13 But the person who endures to the end will be saved. 8

1 sn Archelaus took after his father Herod the Great in terms of cruelty and ruthlessness, so Joseph was afraid to go there. After further direction in a dream, he went instead to Galilee.

2 sn See the note on King Herod in 2:1.

3 sn Fruit worthy of repentance refers to the deeds that indicate a change of attitude (heart) on the part of John’s hearers.

4 tn Grk “fruit worthy of.”

5 tn Grk “But go.” The Greek μᾶλλον (mallon, “rather, instead”) conveys the adversative nuance here so that δέ (de) has not been translated.

6 tn Grk “And whoever.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

7 tn Or possibly “What sort of commandment in the law is great?”

8 sn But the person who endures to the end will be saved. Jesus was not claiming here that salvation is by works. He was simply arguing that genuine faith evidences itself in persistence through even the worst of trials.
