Matthew 17:25

Context
17:25 He said, “Yes.” When Peter came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, 1  “What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect tolls or taxes – from their sons 2  or from foreigners?”

Matthew 20:21

Context
20:21 He said to her, “What do you want?” She replied, 3  “Permit 4  these two sons of mine to sit, one at your 5  right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”

1 tn Grk “spoke first to him, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant in English and has not been translated.

2 sn The phrase their sons may mean “their citizens,” but the term “sons” has been retained here in order to preserve the implicit comparison between the Father and his Son, Jesus.

3 tn Grk “said to him.”

4 tn Grk “Say that.”

5 tc A majority of witnesses read σου (sou, “your”) here, perhaps for clarification. At the same time, it is possible that the pronoun dropped out through haplography or was excised because of perceived redundancy (there are two other such pronouns in the verse) by א B. Either way, the translation adds it due to the requirements of English style. NA27 includes σου here.
