Matthew 16:23

Context
16:23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but on man’s.” 1

Matthew 22:21

Context
22:21 They replied, 2  “Caesar’s.” He said to them, 3  “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 4

Matthew 27:54

Context
27:54 Now when the centurion 5  and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified and said, “Truly this one was God’s Son!”

1 tn Grk “people.”

2 tn Grk “they said to him.”

3 tn Grk “then he said to them.” τότε (tote) has not been translated to avoid redundancy.

4 sn Jesus’ answer to give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s was a both/and, not the questioners’ either/or. So he slipped out of their trap.

5 sn See the note on the word centurion in Matt 8:5.
