Matthew 1:20

Context
1:20 When he had contemplated this, an 1  angel of the Lord 2  appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 6:25

Context
Do Not Worry

6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry 3  about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing?

Matthew 14:19

Context
14:19 Then 4  he instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, 5  who in turn gave them to the crowds. 6

Matthew 21:21

Context
21:21 Jesus 7  answered them, “I tell you the truth, 8  if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.

1 tn Grk “behold, an angel.” The Greek word ἰδού (idou) has not been translated because it has no exact English equivalent here, but adds interest and emphasis (BDAG 468 s.v. 1).

2 tn Or “the angel of the Lord.” Linguistically, “angel of the Lord” is the same in both testaments (and thus, he is either “an angel of the Lord” or “the angel of the Lord” in both testaments). For arguments and implications, see ExSyn 252; M. J. Davidson, “Angels,” DJG, 9; W. G. MacDonald argues for “an angel” in both testaments: “Christology and ‘The Angel of the Lord’,” Current Issues in Biblical and Patristic Interpretation, 324-35.

3 tn Or “do not be anxious,” and so throughout the rest of this paragraph.

4 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “Then.”

5 tn Grk “And after instructing the crowds to recline for a meal on the grass, after taking the five loaves and the two fish, after looking up to heaven, he gave thanks, and after breaking the loaves he gave them to the disciples.” Although most of the participles are undoubtedly attendant circumstance, there are but two indicative verbs – “he gave thanks” and “he gave.” The structure of the sentence thus seems to focus on these two actions and has been translated accordingly.

6 tn Grk “to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds.”

7 tn Grk “And answering, Jesus said.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.

8 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”
