Mark 10:44

Context
10:44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave 1  of all.

Mark 12:3

Context
12:3 But 2  those tenants 3  seized his slave, 4  beat him, 5  and sent him away empty-handed. 6

1 tn Though δοῦλος (doulos) is normally translated “servant,” the word does not bear the connotation of a free individual serving another. BDAG notes that “‘servant’ for ‘slave’ is largely confined to Biblical transl. and early American times…in normal usage at the present time the two words are carefully distinguished” (BDAG 260 s.v. 1). The most accurate translation is “bondservant” (sometimes found in the ASV for δοῦλος), in that it often indicates one who sells himself into slavery to another. But as this is archaic, few today understand its force.

2 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

3 tn Grk “But they”; the referent (the tenants, v. 1) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

4 tn Grk “seizing him, they beat and sent away empty-handed.” The referent of the direct object of “seizing” (the slave sent by the owner) has been specified in the translation for clarity. The objects of the verbs “beat” and “sent away” have been supplied in the translation to conform to English style. Greek often omits direct objects when they are clear from the context.

5 sn The image of the tenants beating up the owner’s slave pictures the nation’s rejection of the prophets and their message.

6 sn The slaves being sent empty-handed suggests that the vineyard was not producing any fruit – and thus neither was the nation of Israel.
