Luke 12:13

Context

12:13 Then 4  someone from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell 5  my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

Luke 16:12

Context
16:12 And if you haven’t been trustworthy 6  with someone else’s property, 7  who will give you your own 8 ?

Luke 16:30

Context
16:30 Then 9  the rich man 10  said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead 11  goes to them, they will repent.’

1 tn Grk “And as.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

2 tn Grk “going,” but “walking” is an accurate description of how they traveled about.

3 tc Most mss (A C W Θ Ψ Ë13 33 Ï) add κύριε (kurie, “Lord”) here, but scribes were prone to add to the text, especially appellations for the Lord. The shorter reading also enjoys significant ms support (Ì45,75 א B D L Ξ Ë1 lat co).

sn The statement “I will follow you wherever you go” is an offer to follow Jesus as a disciple, no matter what the cost.

4 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

5 sn Tell my brother. In 1st century Jewish culture, a figure like a rabbi was often asked to mediate disputes, except that here mediation was not requested, but representation.

6 tn Or “faithful.”

7 tn Grk “have not been faithful with what is another’s.”

8 tn Grk “what is your own.”

9 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

10 tn Grk “he”; the referent (the rich man, v. 19) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

11 sn If someone from the dead goes to them. The irony and joy of the story is that what is denied the rich man’s brothers, a word of warning from beyond the grave, is given to the reader of the Gospel in this exchange.
