Luke 9:37

Context
Healing a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

9:37 Now on 1  the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.

Luke 13:9

Context
13:9 Then if 2  it bears fruit next year, 3  very well, 4  but if 5  not, you can cut it down.’”

1 tn Grk “Now it happened that on.” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

2 tn This is a third class condition in the Greek text. The conjunction καί (kai, a component of κάν [kan]) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

3 tn Grk “the coming [season].”

4 tn The phrase “very well” is supplied in the translation to complete the elided idea, but its absence is telling.

5 tn This is a first class condition in the Greek text, showing which of the options is assumed.
