Luke 24:39

Context
24:39 Look at my hands and my feet; it’s me! 9  Touch me and see; a ghost 10  does not have flesh and bones like you see I have.”

1 tn Grk “answering, he said.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified to “he replied.”

2 tn There is some discussion about the grammar of this verse in Greek. If “these” is the subject, then it reads, “These are my mother and brothers, those who.” If “these” is a nominative absolute, which is slightly more likely, then the verse more literally reads, “So my mother and brothers, they are those who.” The sense in either case is the same.

3 sn Hearing and doing the word of God is another important NT theme: Luke 6:47-49; Jas 1:22-25.

4 tn Grk “And behold.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the somewhat unexpected appearance of the man. The Greek word ἰδού (idou) at the beginning of this statement has not been translated because it has no exact English equivalent here, but adds interest and emphasis (BDAG 468 s.v. 1).

5 tn Grk “cried out, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

6 tn This verb means “to have regard for”; see Luke 1:48.

7 tn This verb is future indicative, and thus not subordinate to “grant” (διατίθεμαι, diatiqemai) as part of the result clause beginning with ἵνα ἔσθητε ({ina esqhte) at the beginning of v. 30. It is better understood as a predictive future.

8 sn The statement you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel looks at the future authority the Twelve will have when Jesus returns. They will share in Israel’s judgment.

9 tn Grk “that it is I myself.”

10 tn See tc note on “ghost” in v. 37.
