Luke 7:42
Context7:42 When they could not pay, he canceled 2 the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
Luke 11:43
Context11:43 Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seats 3 in the synagogues 4 and elaborate greetings 5 in the marketplaces!
1 sn Love your enemies is the first of four short exhortations that call for an unusual response to those who are persecuting disciples. Disciples are to relate to hostility in a completely unprecedented manner.
2 tn The verb ἐχαρίσατο (ecarisato) could be translated as “forgave.” Of course this pictures the forgiveness of God’s grace, which is not earned but bestowed with faith (see v. 49).
3 tn Or “seats of honor.” The term here is plural and is not a reference only to the lead “seat of Moses” in the synagogue, but includes the front seats near the ark.
4 sn See the note on synagogues in 4:15.
5 tn Grk “and the greetings.”
sn The later Jewish summary of oral tradition, the Talmud, notes elaborate greetings for rabbis. The rebuke here is for pride.
