Luke 5:28

Context
5:28 And he got up and followed him, leaving everything 1  behind. 2

Luke 14:20

Context
14:20 Another 3  said, ‘I just got married, and I cannot come.’ 4

1 sn On the phrase leaving everything see Luke 5:10-11; 14:33.

2 tn The participial phrase “leaving everything behind” occurs at the beginning of the sentence, but has been transposed to the end in the translation for logical reasons, since it serves to summarize Levi’s actions.

3 tn Grk “And another.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

4 sn I just got married, and I cannot come. There is no request to be excused here; just a refusal. Why this disqualifies attendance is not clear. The OT freed a newly married man from certain responsibilities such as serving in the army (Deut 20:7; 24:5), but that would hardly apply to a banquet. The invitation is not respected in any of the three cases.
