Luke 5:11

Context
5:11 So 1  when they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed 2  him.

Luke 5:23

Context
5:23 Which is easier, 3  to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’?

1 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the result of Jesus’ pronouncement.

2 sn The expression left everything and followed him pictures discipleship, which means that to learn from Jesus is to follow him as the guiding priority of one’s life.

3 sn Which is easier is a reflective kind of question. On the one hand to declare sins are forgiven is easier, since one does not need to see it, unlike telling a paralyzed person to walk. On the other hand, it is harder, because for it to be true one must possess the authority to forgive the sin.
