Luke 22:4

Context
22:4 He went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard 1  how he might 2  betray Jesus, 3  handing him over to them. 4

Luke 21:12

Context
21:12 But before all this, 5  they will seize 6  you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues 7  and prisons. You 8  will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.

1 tn The full title στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ (strathgo" tou Jierou; “officer of the temple” or “captain of the temple guard”) is sometimes shortened to στρατηγός as here (L&N 37.91).

2 tn Luke uses this frequent indirect question to make his point (BDF §267.2).

3 tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

4 tn Grk “how he might hand him over to them,” in the sense of “betray him.”

5 sn But before all this. Another note of timing is present, this one especially important in understanding the sequence in the discourse. Before the things noted in vv. 8-11 are the events of vv. 12-19.

6 tn Grk “will lay their hands on you.”

7 sn Some of the persecution is of Jewish origin (the synagogues). Some fulfillment of this can be seen in Acts. See the note on synagogues in 4:15.

8 tn Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
