Luke 23:5
Context23:5 But they persisted 6 in saying, “He incites 7 the people by teaching throughout all Judea. It started in Galilee and ended up here!” 8
1 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” since vv. 37-38 serve as something of a summary or transition from the discourse preceding to the passion narrative that follows.
2 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
3 tn Grk “in the temple.”
4 tn Grk “and spent the night,” but this is redundant because of the previous use of the word “night.”
5 tn Grk “at the mountain called ‘of Olives.’”
sn See the note on the phrase Mount of Olives in 19:29.
6 tn Or “were adamant.” For “persisted in saying,” see L&N 68.71.
7 sn He incites the people. The Jewish leadership claimed that Jesus was a political threat and had to be stopped. By reiterating this charge of stirring up rebellion, they pressured Pilate to act, or be accused of overlooking political threats to Rome.
8 tn Grk “beginning from Galilee until here.”
