Herod’s Confusion about Jesus

9:7 Now Herod 3  the tetrarch 4  heard about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed, 5  because some people were saying that John 6  had been raised from the dead,

1 tn The verb γινώσκετε (ginwskete, “know”) can be parsed as either present indicative or present imperative. In this context the imperative fits better, since the movement is from analogy (trees and seasons) to the future (the signs of the coming of the kingdom) and since the emphasis is on preparation for this event.

2 sn The kingdom of God refers here to the kingdom in all its power. See Luke 17:20-37.

3 sn Herod refers here to Herod Antipas. See the note on Herod Antipas in 3:1.

4 sn See the note on tetrarch in 3:1.

5 tn Or “was very confused.” See L&N 32.10 where this verse is given as an example of the usage.

6 sn John refers to John the Baptist, whom Herod had beheaded (v. 9).
