Luke 20:25

Context
20:25 So 1  he said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 2

Luke 21:7

Context
21:7 So 3  they asked him, 4  “Teacher, when will these things 5  happen? And what will be the sign that 6  these things are about to take place?”

1 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate that Jesus’ pronouncement results from the opponents’ answer to his question.

2 sn Jesus’ answer to give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s was a both/and, not the questioners’ either/or. So he slipped out of their trap.

3 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of Jesus’ comments about the temple’s future destruction.

4 tn Grk “asked him, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in English and has not been translated.

5 sn Both references to these things are plural, so more than the temple’s destruction is in view. The question may presuppose that such a catastrophe signals the end.

6 tn Grk “when.”
